As an architect and geographer working at the CNRS in France, Dr. Schneier-Madanes is deeply engaged in the development of research networks in France – “rés-eau-ville” – and at the international level - Wat-Cit-Ter. This last activity led to the founding of the first CNRS Social sciences UMI Unité Mixte Internationale (Joint International research Unit) at the University of Arizona. |

An International Research Network (GDRI)
Since 2007, Dr.Schneier-Madanes, director of GDRI, has brought together several research units in the Americas around major challenges in water in the hemisphere. The goal is to explore new research avenues: paradigm shift (economy, law), vulnerable populations (indigenous, poor) and environmental justice and water rights.

SWAN is the first International Cooperation project granted by the EU in the US, a four-year project granted by the European Commission (FP7-INCOLAB-2011) which focuses on the creation of a new Joint Research Centre on Sustainable Water. Urban Water Research Network, a research network within the INSHS
Dr. Schneier-Madanes, director of rés-eau-ville, has been leading this effort since 2002, bringing colleagues from diverse backgrounds together to integrate their approaches to water research. The framework developed by “rés-eau-ville” has proven to be a model for emerging studies, suggesting future comparison and connecting with academic institutions, policy makers, managers, associations, and NGOs.
